Requirements for Adoption from South Korea
AGE: Parents must be between the ages of 25-43½ to adopt from South Korea. Husbands cannot be more than 10 years older than wives. Wifes cannot be more than 6 years older than husbands.
MARITAL STATUS: The South Korea adoption program accepts married couples only, who have been married a minimum of three years. No more than one divorce is allowed in each parent's past.
CHILDREN: Other children living in the home must be at least twelve months of age at the time of application. To be eligible to adopt, couples may not have more than four children currently in the home.
WEIGHT: Adoptive couples may not exceed a height:weight ratio of 30% greater weight than what is considered customary for their height. Please contact ABC to obtain a chart to calculate your height:weight ratio.
HEALTH & MENTAL HEALTH: Adoptive couples must be in excellent physical and mental health. All medical conditions and medications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants with any form of DSM-4 diagnoses or who have or are taking psychotropic medications will not be accepted. Past history or current counseling may not be approved.
EDUCATION: Adoptive couples must have a high school dipolma.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND: History of arrests may need to be prescreened with Korea.
HOME STUDY: ABC Adoption is required to complete the home study for the South Korea program. (A home study is valid for one year from the date of approval).
RELIGION/SPIRITUAL BELIEFS: Each couple must indicate their religion and/or spiritual beliefs.
INFANT CPR CLASSES: Each couple will be required to attend a Certified Infant CPR Class and submit a statement of attendance for each session. If adopting a child over 3 years of age, you may substitute an adult CPR class.
SMOKING: ABC believes that smoking in the home is a threat to the health of a child.
FAMILY CARE LEAVE: If both parents plan to continue working, a six (6) week leave after placement must be taken to care for the child. This responsibility may be taken by one parent or shared between them.
